# 023: no smoking
March 10th, 2008 by admin

Today my topic is the smoking ban, because some of you have asked. I myself do not smoke, so I am especially pleased that in Germany there are more and more prohibitions and therefore the air for Non smoking is always better.

Previously you could smoke anywhere. In 1975, then banned in Germany but making the radio or television advertising of cigarettes. In the cinema, however, there still advertising for Marlboro and Co, as well as on billboards in the city.

In the 80 years was an important rule: You could smoke in the aircraft and later no longer in airports. Since September 2007, it should also stop smoking in train stations, which is prohibited by law. Only small areas are marked on the ground, and here may the smokers who gather around an ashtray. Also in trains may not be puff away.

For several years in Germany is prohibited from smoking in many public buildings. For example, in schools. That is not true for all states. Also, in most offices or at the work of the people may hardly be smoked. There is then usually a way to smoke outdoors. I spent a year working alongside a chain-smoker, I constantly had a sore throat.

All of these prohibitions was usually accepted without much protest. But this year there was trouble. For since the law took effect, banning smoking in the restaurant industry. This should be Non smoking only, including the people who work in restaurants and in passive smokers. Since you can eat without smoke odors from his pulp. The smokers go outside to smoke and then stand in the cold. Some clubs have now but also converted to smoking clubs, because the public may continue to smoke in closed societies.

For Bavaria is: Smoking should be no longer in public buildings is not in government, in institutions for children and young people in universities, hospitals, retirement or nursing homes and at the airports, as well as in restaurants. We are now eager to know the Oktoberfest will be no smoke. I'm looking forward to it. Oh, by the way: Who wants to smoke, which can go in Bavaria in a shopping center or jail. There it is allowed. And of course in their own home or outdoors.

    Dear Ms Annik,
Thank you for your article. I am a Chinese participant and currently I live in Magdeburg, and here I know Slow German. Munich is a beautiful city, we have just been in there, namely in Feldafing, 2 months usual. The standard mountain lake is also very nice. I want to learn German well. Can you tell me if I do not understand something to thank? Thank you for your help.
    Best regards

I like your podcast and what you are doing here but I really have to disagree with you on this subject. I am a former smoker and also dislike the smell of cigarettes but I believe in the rights of others to choose to smoke. I also get migraine headaches from perfumes and colognes. Should people be banned from wearing perfumes as well? Many people have food allergies, as analyzed from peanuts. Should restaurants be banned from serving these items to protect these individuals?
Why should business owners decide what kind of business for Themselves they want to run, and not have the government decide for them? If they want to cater to smokers but the community Decides that it is a bad idea, then their businesses will suffer, as these customers will now frequent other non smoking establishments instead. As for potential employees of said businesses, they have the right to not work there if the goings on of these businesses goes against their religious, health or moral beliefs. For instance, should a pharmacist who is catholic be allowed to keep his job even though he refuses to sell contraceptives to customers based on his religious beliefs? Or should a muslim woman be allowed to sue her employer because she is not allowed to wear a burka during the performance of her job in the service industry? Last time I checked, McDonald's employees have to wear a uniform or be fired. These are two factual instances that happened here in the U.S. My point here is that they can work elsewhere if they are having issues with what goes on there.
So I would like to suggest that when discussing subjects that may be sensitive to others, that you err on the side of caution and present yourself as being a bit more neutral. You came across as being a bit sadistic in knowing that the smokers will now have to huddle in the cold around the asian.
