# 026: Pets
May 9th, 2008 by admin

Tiger and my ibook Christa asked me to talk about pets. The Germans have many pets! 23 million four-legged friends live at 83 million people. Are 5.3 million dogs in Germany. If we here in Munich for example in the English garden is, therefore, in a large park, you see many dogs with their owners. In many towns and cities there is a legal leash. Dogs may not run free there. I think that's right, because I was a child was attacked by a dog and injured. This is what happens nunmal quickly, even if a dog wants to play only. Children react very often wrong - and they're injured.

Dangerous dogs must also wear a muzzle in Germany. Fighting dogs must be approved. In parks you can see the dogs often run free. My impression is that there is at least in Munich, mainly large dogs, so for example the beautiful Golden Retriever or Labrador. The famous German Shepherd dog is seen less frequently. And of course there are also small dogs such as the wire-haired dachshund. In Munich, called these small, stubborn dogs, "Zamperl". In many restaurants and beer gardens are especially for dogs with a bowl of water, so they have something to drink in the summer.

I myself am not a big dog lover. You are to me very domesticated and I would not want to go several times a day with the dog for a walk. It means to walk.

Therefore, I have a cat. There are 7.8 million cats in Germany, which means almost one in ten German has a cat. I think cats are good for the psyche. If a cat lays on my lap and begins to purr when I stroke it, that's wonderful. For us it is forbidden to remove the cats their claws. In the U.S., which is so often done so that damage the cat does not scratch furniture or wallpaper and. So my cat does not do this, he has a scratching post, so a one-meter tall tower, where he can let off steam. He has also of course a litter box that needs to be cleaned every day needs.

Once a year I have with my cat to the vet to check. This looks him in the ears and eyes, he scrapes tartar from teeth and checked his mouth and looks to see if the coat is in order. Then he gets a shot. This different vaccinations are included, so that he does not get any diseases. My cat is always in the apartment, so for him it is not very dangerous, but wilder cats can also get rabies and bring ticks home with you.

Of course there are other pets in German households. For example, hamsters or mice, rats or birds. It is important that they all be kept in appropriate conditions. So that they have enough space to let off steam or to hide, good enough food and fresh water, and of course funding, so they are not alone.

A few words for you when you talk about animals: animals have in most cases, feet, no legs or feet. A dog or cat have four paws. When dogs get too hot, they pant. So they hang their tongue out of your mouth and breathe as the air. Cats have very sensitive whiskers, which are the long hair that they have around their mouth. Oh yes, it is said in animals and mouth and not your mouth. Cats can purr, meow, hiss, and of course, if they feel threatened.

The song comes at the end of the band " Sound Stone "featuring Sylvia Gerlach. He is "very quiet". Found on the Podsafe Music Network.

    Madam Rubens,
I find your podcast very well done, and I'm glad to hear it. I enjoy very much the song that was on episode # 26 Pets: All Quiet on the band's "sound rock". Do you know where I can find the words to the song? I've looked and can not find it. Thank you for your help!
    Yours sincerely,

Ok, Karen: I just wanted to say that although we call a dog and a cat "quadruped," there are special words for their legs, one of them is "hind leg" for the hind legs of dogs, rabbits and deer. Saying a dog has "legs" (legs) is colloquial.
