# 028: clothing
16. June 2008

Barbara has written me a mail. They traveled to Germany in July and do not want to stand out as a tourist. She is 50 years old and asks if she can wear jeans, or whether they should wear a skirt. I think it's great that they are thinking about something makes! So I will be in this episode talking about clothes. In colloquial language, you can also wear clothes call.

Previously, there was a big difference between East and West Germany, which are clothing. Today, the difference is much smaller. Anyway the differences are getting smaller, because in every city the same shops. The reason is globalization - many shops are chain stores. So there is in every city a C & A, H & M, Benetton or Esprit. Because many Germans their clothes on the internet, include the majority of Germans similar.

Generally, there are few rules about the clothing is concerned. School uniforms are available in Germany do not, children can wear what they want. Teenagers wear very fashionable clothes of course - the guys who like baggy pants, are all currently Chucks back on their feet. That-are these basketball shoes from Converse. Even leggings are back in fashion. It currently looks like everything is in the 80s.

Young adults dress differently depending on whether they live on land or in the city. It also plays a role, what they do for a profession. Who works in the office, is of course very formal clothes. Men wear a suit, women either a trouser suit or a costume (ie a jacket and a skirt). For a jacket, you can also say blazer or jacket. In the big cities many people are fashionably dressed. In Berlin we see many very "weird" outfits, the women there often have a very individual, creative style. Otherwise, many people are simply jeans and T-shirts, which is always in order in everyday life.

But I can tell what is unusual is what the Germans, for example, is different from Americans. Let's start with the elderly. In the U.S., many old people wear jeans and baseball caps. This makes no one in Germany. Old German women - and by that I mean women from approximately 75, taken in most cases skirts. Young women less so. Pants are practical, so many young women wear trousers.

I am American tourists are often on that they wear white socks. Tennis Socks. And white sneakers. It makes hardly any German. It wears rather dark shoes. Many tourists are also through their pockets, or through their cameras. And they like to buy sweatshirts, where large, "University of Harvard" draufsteht or "Hofbräuhaus" in Munich, Germany. But that's not all bad. What bothers me: tourists often behave very loud - this is true but also to Germans abroad. My advice, therefore: Jeans and T-shirt during the day is in order, in the summer when it is hot like a dress or a skirt. But we must also be comfortable shoes, because as a tourist in Germany you have to much to walk.

The summer in Germany to be very fickle. Time, it's cold and it rains, then the sun appears again and it is hot. Therefore, I recommend that all visitors of the so-called onion look. A T-shirt, a sweater, a light jacket and perhaps a raincape are. This is the perfect tourist outfit. You can also go to museums or churches, and there is no problem. And always think on it: In Germany there are not so many buildings with air conditioning as in the USA! It may also be inside warm properly.

There is a difference however between the U.S. and Germany: while it bothers anyone in America that people in Bermuda shorts in a five-star hotel it would be unthinkable in Germany. Who here in an expensive hotel or an expensive restaurant it should be elegant and expensive dress.

I think it's important that you are in his dress feels at home. Then one has a charisma and self-confident people are such tourists find appealing. And if you like to go shopping, dear Barbara, but then go shopping in Germany and looking for your typical European clothing! Have fun, I wish you on your journey!

I have music again with this, this time by Simon Saiz the song "True love - when the moon laughs from the Podsafe Music Network.
