AAG: You and You
September 15th, 2008 by admin

Amanda asked me how it looks with the German title. When you say "you" and when they say "you"? That is to say not that easy! If you approach a complete stranger, you say "you". When a child addresses a strange old man, it should also "you" say. This is a sign of respect and courtesy. Even his own boss at work is usually addressed formally. But it depends on the industry. In the media sector, for example name basis with you often, even across the hierarchy. Even people who are about the same old name basis, often, even though they know not. However, this is really only when you look is appealing! Anyone who is unsure should just ask her. It often happens that one is only addressed formally, and then eventually the offers or the elder the younger, the "you" of. Duzen siezen right? This is a question of feeling, and as a German you can go wrong and is making the wrong decision ...

Yes, but why is because "you" or "you"?

When I was a student at Philipps University in Marburg (from too many years ago), I organized a group trip to the Oktoberfest. Here 'what I meant, it would be good Platzresevierungen to book for the train.

When we reached our reserved compartments, we found an elderly couple in one compartment. They did as if they have not understood, although we have offered the explanation in several languages.

Finally, frustrated, a fellow student has addressed as "you". Therefore, a large but finite time response, outraged the man said, "You do not insult us! We will move us ".

    It was that simple!
