Slow Deutsch # 039: Holiday
December 8th, 2008 by admin

Chris from Oklahoma asked me where the Germans like to go on vacation. I've now looked at a recent statistic, and this is really amazing. 23 percent of Germans are on vacation in their own country. I can understand that, because in Germany there are many beautiful things to see. You can drive to the North or Baltic Sea and on holiday at the beach, or you can drive in the Bavarian Alps and the mountains and lakes look there. Or you can of course also make a nice city break to Berlin for example.

But for me part of the holiday also to experience another culture and another language. Eight percent of Germans drive, for example, like in Spain. But most of all to Mallorca. Mallorca is the favorite holiday island of the Germans. Meanwhile, so many people go to malls, as many call it, that the people have already started to speak German. There are German restaurants and pubs there - I think it's a shame.

Immediately after Spain is Italy. Almost seven percent of Germans drive to Italy on loved ones. When I was a kid, my parents drove me to the car every summer to Italy. Especially for families that is optimal. The food tastes all the children, there are beautiful beaches, the people are very nice and family-friendly and above all: It is not far away. With the car we have been from southern Germany, only seven or eight hours.

Many also like German travel to Hungary, the Czech Republic or Austria. Or in the far north to Scandinavia. And at least 3 percent of France dream. There I would like to do next year holiday, let's see if it works. Greece and Croatia are also popular, and of course also fly many German - around 3 percent - to North America. Most of my friends were already in Thailand, it is probably the most popular destination in Asia for German. In my family, is currently a clear trend: they all go to Egypt and then make a Nile cruise.

Of course there are different ways to make holiday. You can fly by plane on vacation or you drive by car or train. And you can also take a caravan on holiday, then just park there on a campsite and spend time there. It has a small kitchen with me and a bed. Many campers go every year to the same campsite, and there meet the same people every year.

For many German holiday simply means warm weather, lots of sun, beach and good food. Therefore, the southern states are more popular than the northern. I find it boring, however, to lie all day on the beach. I would like to see something on holiday, I would like to see lots and lots of running around on foot and gather new impressions. I want to try to observe and understand the people, and so much to taste of their food as possible. Because other countries are exciting, do not you think? Determined. Otherwise you would not learn German ...

So, now again at the end of music, from "The Golden Kissers" the play "The white sailor." Have fun!

Annik Hello! Your website and actually find your voice, I actually great! Thank you for your effort!
Somewhat surprisingly, however, seems to me: you have mentioned Turkey as a holiday favorite ever since ... There are even German villages!
    Best regards!

Hi, I'm from china. But I learned German in Japan. I had never heard of this page before my teacher has recommended it to me. I think it is great, because I can not only learn German, but can get to know the whole German geschellschaft. I like to listen to for hours, because it makes a lot of fun. The page makes a lot of determined effort. many thanks!

I have also previously known that the Germans like to travel to Germany. That does not surprise me, because Germany has the Baltic and North Sea. :)

This is a very interesting statistic. Relates to what source is this? And how has the behavior of the Germans in the running of time has changed. I think that very many German holiday in Egypt do. Turkey is safe here also play an important role.

Can you write more about this yet? Would really interest me.
