Slow Deutsch # 056: Youth
September 22nd, 2009 by admin

A hostel is an accommodation, that is a place where you can sleep. There is something similar to a hotel. A hostel is like the name says a hotel for young people. The difference is primarily a hotel for the price of a room. Most hostels are much cheaper. Often there are multiple rooms, so rooms with several beds in it. There is a dining room and usually nice offers for families, so for example a playground or a swimming pool. Another difference to the hotel: guests must obtain their own beds with bedding and pull off before you leave. This makes the hotel a chambermaid. Towels Guests must bring your own or rent at the hostel.

How this concept come about? The first youth hostel was built exactly 100 years ago, namely on 26 August 1909th The teacher Richard Schirrmann was then traveling with a school group. He wanted to walk for eight days with the children. The first night they slept in the barn of a nice farmer. On the second night, however, a thunderstorm was raging, and they found no long stay. Finally, they finally came to the village school. The teacher could not sleep - so he got the idea to set up their own hostels for other hikers. A little later he established the first youth hostel.

The idea, it quickly: In 1932 there were over 2100 youth. At that time they still had large dormitories where many sleeping children and young people in a room together. International Youth Hostels are called the "Youth Hostels". Worldwide there are now 4500 youth hostels in Germany there are still 550th These youth have different standards: Hostels in Category 1 are more simply furnished, the hostels of the Category 4 provide superior comfort, and are thus better equipped and furnished.

It is important to the youth that they are not just an accommodation. They stand for peace. They want young people and children travel a lot to learn about other countries and other people and thus to learn tolerance. In such a hostel is often spends time with other guests and learn to know each other better. Hostels are often used to travel with a whole school class. The children may, for example, one week vacation in a hostel instead of going to school. But they learn on the spot in the hostel with their teacher other things, for example on the environment and nature. The Head of Youth is often still known as "warden". And a cliche for hostels, this is often true, the constantly poured from a large pot of tea.

Who wants to stay in a hostel, need not necessarily be a child. Meanwhile, it is possible to stay there as an adult. But it is important to be a member of the German Youth Hostel Association. This is the organization, which includes all youth. The German Youth Hostel Association, DJH is short, incidentally, a registered charity. About clubs, there was already a slow Deutsch sequence, you can be listened to you. So if you want to stay in a hostel, to be a member of this organization, and that costs money, but not much. Currently, the amounts are between 12.50 € and 21 € for a whole year. This is of course the price for a night, breakfast is always included.
