Maybe You did not know that the billboard is a German invention. But it was invented by Ernst Litfaß. He was born in 1816 in Berlin and was a professional printer. He noted that Berlin could affix posters everywhere. And it was ugly. So he proposed to set up columns, so that citizens had a place of their posters.
For years he had to negotiate until he got approval in 1854. Shortly after the first hundred pillars were erected in Berlin. Today billboards are in every German city.
