Slow German # 035 - Religion

I was asked to talk about religion. Religion in Germany. As is so often necessary to distinguish this topic from East Germany and West Germany. For in East Germany, so in the former GDR, the government had an anti-religious attitude. Therefore, today, 68 percent of East Germans are not religious. More precisely, they belong to no church. Whether they have a belief in itself is difficult to research. In West Germany, this figure looks very different: there are only 15 percent belong to any religious community. People like me.

Most Germans are Christians. A third of Germans are Catholic, one third are Protestants, Protestants so. The rest belongs to none of these communities. One can recognize a territorial subdivision: The north of Germany is more Protestant, the Catholic south.

Of course there are other denominations in Germany, there are Jews or Orthodox Christians, Baptists and Jehovah's Witnesses, but their number is very small. After the Catholics and Protestants there are in Germany, especially Muslims, they account for four percent of the population. This is because in the 60s there were many guest workers from Turkey to Germany and are still here.

The Christian churches in Germany have worried. More and more people come out of the church, is they do not want to officially belong to this religious community. This not only spiritual problems for the Church, but also financial. For each of the faithful in Germany pays the so-called church tax. You will be confiscated by the state with the other taxes and distributed to the churches. Of this money will be mainly financed social services, and church nurseries, nursing homes and other care facilities. The more people leave the church, the less people pay church tax.

It is important to church attendance for most Christians at Christmas or Easter. Here, then, the festival is celebrated each in size. Few Germans, however, go to church every Sunday.

In a city like Munich, the Catholic Church is everywhere. This means it is everywhere. Especially in the old city are numerous Catholic churches, old buildings, which are very ornate. Even the symbol of Munich, the Frauenkirche, a church with two towers. On the hour, ringing church bells can be heard everywhere. For me it's a beautiful sound, even though I'm not a believer. Religion has indeed been separated since 1919 in the German Constitution of the state, but she always plays a role again. For example, there are many religious festivals in Germany, such as All Saints, of which I have already told you.

In many schools, courtrooms and crosses hanging on the wall. This triggered a few years ago from the so-called crucifix decision. If a child feels disturbed in his classroom from the cross, the cross must be removed. Was another legal fight over whether teachers and students in the school may wear headscarves, that is a clear sign of their Muslim religion.

At school there are also religious education that is compulsory for all students. Who does not want to go to the Catholic or Protestant teaching, instead of going into an ethics class today.

Today, some music of Cat-music , the song is called mental cinema. Found in the Podsafe Music Network.

# 021: Ash Wednesday

Today is Ash Wednesday, a Christian holiday. But we must still work on that day, even in Catholic Bavaria.

The Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. Starting today, the faithful Christians, and some other people will fast for 40 days. So nothing to eat. They should remember that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert. This lasts until Easter, Lent, Holy Saturday to be precise.

Devout Christians go to church today and get a cross of ashes from the priest painted on the forehead. I myself am not a religious person, so I can not tell you more about it.

Interestingly, Ash Wednesday is also for me, and that because there are so-called political Ash Wednesday. This is a Bavarian invention, as already 500 years, farmers have taken on that day and talked about politics. Later, there were rallies, and now have all the political parties today, a big event. Since coming together all the important politicians, and there are fiery speeches. This will even be televised.

Traditionally, there is a big fish on Ash Wednesday meal, which is to tune into the Lenten season. One could also say that Ash Wednesday has more to do with what a hangover than with a fish. Even today celebrated Carnival in Germany. It started officially at 11.11., Ie on 11 November, at 11 clock 11th The real start was then on the 6th January, the Epiphany. And since then, people have dressed up and celebrated. This is connected with the pagan Winteraustreibung. As they tried to drive away the winter spirits, so that it is finally summer.

Today we celebrate that, too, and especially in Catholic areas a lot happens. In Bavaria, however, less, for example, are the strongholds of Cologne and Mainz. For one week, it is colorful and loud. It begins on Thursday nonsensical, also known as dirty carnival Thursday or women. Then comes the Rose Monday and Shrove Tuesday. As people move with loud bands around. And they drink a lot of alcohol. Of these, one gets a hangover is well known, that is bad headache. In some areas of Germany, the carnival is called Fastnacht or Carnival also by the way.

# 019 carol singers

I want to tell you today about the carol singers. The whole thing is a very old tradition. On 6 January hosts many different things. The Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on that day or the birth of Christ. It is also the Epiphany. In southern Germany, Austria and Saxony-Anhalt, this day is a public holiday, we have to work not so. There is also a very special event: On this day, children go from house to house and sing. For this they get money and that money is collected and donated to charities.

The children are dressed as the three kings Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. With consecrated chalk to draw it at the door or the door, the message "20 * C + M + B 08". This is supposedly not the initials of the three kings, but for the Latin phrase "Christ mansionem benedicat", or "Christ bless this house". The house should therefore be protected from harm - as of course the residents.

In Germany, carolers, the world's largest relief operation organized by children for children. This year half a million children have participated. Last year 38.8 million euros during the action have been collected. Half the money will be spent on education, about one fifth for the rehabilitation of children, and at least eight percent of the evangelization of children around the world. Because of course I can not forget to say that the carolers are on behalf of the Catholic Church on the go. They were even blessed by Pope Benedict. Even to the Bellevue Palace, the seat of the German Federal President Horst Köhler, the chalk drawings were made.

This year is the motto of the carolers' Carolers for one world. "
